I just want to learn about how to use games that are both interactive, engaging and educational.
K = What do you know?
W = What do you want to learn?
L = What have you learned? (we'll do this last one later)
Reflection
I am now understanding the difference between gamification and GBL. Before I started this course I was aware of using games in the classroom for engagement however I did not really see the educational value in it. In this level I have learnt about the 4 layers of fun and I saw the benefit in utilizing games like edu Sims and Darfur is dying. I want to learn about more tools I can use within the realm of GBL.
Level 2
Where do I start?
Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Students organize historical information, explain the policitial and culutral developments and events in Australia. I know my students will benefit from gamification however I am still a little lost at where to use in in the Australian curriculum. The examples that have been shown are great however they are US based. For gamification to work in my class room I will have to take the time to develop some lessons however I can use th elements of games in the class. I find it hard when using competition as you do not want to alienate students so I will have to develop individual or group based approaches.
Observe and reflect I have used minecraft to build pyramids in history however i know now that I can do it better. I think it is important that I actually play the games before I use them in the classroom.
Level 3
Premiers Reading Challenge Reflection
The PRC is a great way to engage students in reading. The competition does not neccesarily meet all the components and elements at a 5 rating however not all GBL has to. Progression of the learner is a real strength of the competition as it not only encourages learners through one year but also entices them to come back in following years with the different levels of attainment. In regards to relating to others students can compare how their jounrney to others however it does seem to be an individual self-paced competition. The exception to this is the K-2 section where students can read with others if they are not independent readers.
This acttivity displays challengers, competition, resource acquisition, rewards, transactions and win states.

I think this is a very clever use of GBL. It would have to be modified for NSW and the time dedicate for use too long however it is an engaging concept. ZL is more engaging from a holistic classroom perspective as it caters for a variety of learning styles. I could adapt this for history, for instance how to survive in Ancient Egypt or Rome.
I have tried to upload my rubric however it is not working :(
I have learned so much from this course. I am going to play with some of the ideas that have been presented and adapt them to work in my subject area.. I have also started looking at other Game Based Learning strategies like class craft.com I am going to use some of the social justice games like darfur is dying for society and Culture. I am also going to do more research in the way of educade. To be honest I am slowing starting to use the iPad in class and I am working out the best practice for myself and students. I want to be an expert in a couple of GBL activities then trial it with the students.I feel some of this will take a lot of time so I am just researching for now.
